Apartments Island Čiovo
Located close to Split Airport and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the old town of Trogir, the island of Čiovo became one of the hottest property destinations in the 2004 property boom, as Irish and British investors bought up private apartments on the island, on the promise of easy access from the airport for people to rent on holiday and short breaks.
As such, there was an explosion of construction on the island, and its current status as a popular tourist destination is a far cry from its previous life where it was used as a place for lepers due to its geographical location.
The island has a heritage back to the Roman times, but is more popular these days for its great nature and excellent beaches, many of which are pebble. It also has an expanding activity offer, and its proximity to Split makes it a popular place for sea kayaking, allowing kayakers to take in historic Trogir along the way.
There are various settlements on Čiovo, the most important of which are Slatine, Okrug Donji and Okrug Gornji, which is connected to Trogir by bridge. A new bridge, a 40 million euro construction funded by the EU, is currently being built.
While Split and Trogir are the obvious places to visit, there are several other Dalmatian coastal towns which can be visited comfortably in a day trip, including Primošten and Šibenik.
