Apartments Island Rab - Rab
Despite its island status, the town of Rab is one of Croatia's most historic places, with a fascinating and turbulent history which has been shaped by various invading forces, including Illyrians, the ancient Greeks and Romans, Byzantines, Croatian Kings, Venetians, Hungarians, Habsburgs, and even Napoleon himself.
It is a beautiful old stone town set in a picturesque bay, and late July is one of the best cultural times to visit for the annual Rapska Fjera, complete with crossbow competition, as the town celebrates the liberation of Rab by King Louis I of Anjou, a colourful time to visit the town.
The tourism fortunes of Rab took a huge step forward in late 2014 with the first seaplane flights to the town of Rab from both Split and Zagreb airports. The island is also due to be connected with Pula, Rijeka Airport, Ancona and other destinations, making visiting the town easier than before. The 45-minute flight to Split is one of the most dramatic in Europe, flying along the coast and over pretty Dalmatian towns such as Šibenik, Zadar and Trogir.
The towers of Rab's stone centre make it a pleasant and intriguing place for a walking tour, and there are plenty of organised walking tours available if you want to absorb the history, but heading to the beach is one of the top attractions as well, and Rab is famous at the birth of naturist tourism, after the British king Edward VIII and his new wife Wallace Simpson swam nude here in 1936.
