Apartments Istria

There is no region quite like Istria in Croatia, and many visitors feel the difference soon after arrival. With its strong history and connection to Italy, Istria's history helps to explain the feeling of independence on the peninsula, and it is known as one of the most liberal places in the country.

And there is plenty to see! There are few more impressive sites than the Pula Arena, the sixth largest Roman amphitheatre in the world, but also one of the most innovative concert halls, hosting major rock festivals and even an ice hockey match. Pula's innovative use of heritage for modern tourism includes the fantastic Lighting Giants project, which has transformed the city's skyline with the colourful Uljanik cranes. Close to Pula is Fažana, a boat ride away from the picturesque Brijuni Islands, where zebras and even an elephant roam, the legacy of the home of former President Tito.

Istria is full of traditional stone towns of which perhaps coastal Rovinj is the finest example, jutting out into the Adriatic, and with a warren of streets which hold the secrets of its centuries of rich history. Unlike Dalmatia further south, much of tourism in Istria is based inland, and there are several hilltop villages with a magic of their own, among them Motovun, which is also home to an annual film festival, and whose restaurants excel in one of the region's main gastronomic delights – truffles.

Istria's rich gastronomic tradition is matched by its wines, and the winemakers of Istria have achieved considerable success promoting their indigenous wines. The white Malvazija and red Teran are the most famous once worth trying.

It is also an activity paradise, and cycling tourism is on the rise inland, while destinations such as Umag hold international tennis tournaments and have a range of sporting activities to complement their tourism offer.
