Apartments Region Dubrovnik

With its rich history, impregnable walls and nickname as the Pearl of the Adriatic, it is little wonder that UNESCO World Heritage Site Dubrovnik is the number one destination in the region of the same name. And while not visiting Dubrovnik is an absolute must, there is plenty more to discover in the southern-most part of Croatia.

There are islands with rich history and tradition. Visit the birthplace of Marko Polo in the superbly preserved old town of Korčula, and wonder why he ever left such a gorgeous island while sipping a glass of the famous white Korcula wines of Grk and Posip. Lose yourself in the wondrous nature of Mljet, where St. Paul and Odysseus were both shipwrecked, and which today is an island where more than half is a national park. Not many tourists make it to the remote island of Lastovo, with its famous nature and unique traditions, but that should change this summer (2015.) with the introduction of a seaplane service from the mainland.

The Pelješac Peninsula is the gateway to Korčula and also one of Croatia's most important wine regions. This is Plavac Mali country, the noble Dalmatian grape which is a relative of Zinfandel, and a tour of some of its vineyards is highly recommended. Popular destinations include Orebić, Trpanj, Žuljana and Trstenik.

Guarding the entrance to Peljesac is Ston, whose incredible wall is actually the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China. This is oyster country, and a oyster feast at Mali Ston is mandatory, before investigating the town's fascinating salt history. Heading south from Dubrovnik is the Konavlje region next to the border with Montenegro, and the beautiful town of Cavtat, with its rich heritage and gorgeous bay, is one of the main reasons to visit.

The motorway has now reached Ploče, allowing much easier access by car, while many tourists pass through Metković across the border for a day trip in Mostar.
