Where to Rent Accommodation on Croatia's Islands?

Croatia has more than a thousand islands, but if you are looking to rent private accommodation, the options are a lot more limited. In all, only 66 of the islands are inhabited, and here are a few pointers for renting villas and apartments on some of the more popular islands.

Island Hvar. Hvar Town is one of the top destinations on the Adriatic, and there are plenty of apartments for rent in the old town, as well as several waterfront villas, while a more relaxing option close to the town is on Palmizana, accessible by water taxi. Stari Grad is the oldest town in Croatia, quieter, and there are many renovated apartments to rent in the historic old town, while Jelsa has apartments overlooking the pretty harbour and old town. Head to the southern resort of Sveta Nedjelja and rent an apartment in wine country, the village of Zlatan Otok.

Island Brač. There are many stone villas to rent on the island which gave The White House some of its marble stone, but apartment rentals remain the most popular source of private accommodation on Brač. There are plenty of accommodation options in the most popular resort of Bol, while other resorts such as Milna and Supetar have plenty of private accommodation options.

Island Korčula. Known a "mini-Dubrovnik", the list of beautifully renovated private apartments in the old town continues to grow, and renting accommodation there is a special experience. Don't miss apartment rental opportunities elsewhere on the island, including Blato in the centre, and Vela Luka, which is also home to the region's most interesting cave.

Island Mljet. With half of the island a spectacular national park, most people renting accommodation on Mljet are looking for peace and quiet. With ready access to gorgeous bays and the ubiquitous nature, choose your private accommodation from resorts such as Babino Polje, Okuklje, Pomena and Prozura.

Islands Šolta and Vis. Less visited than the more popular neighbours of Hvar and Brac, Solta and Vis make up the quartet of islands in front of Split. Both have a great stone tradition, and there are several superbly renovated stone villas for rent, while private apartments, both new and traditional conversions, are on offer.

Island Čiovo. With its close location to Split Airport and easy access to Trogir, Ciovo is a popular destination, and the island experienced an explosion of apartment construction in the boom ten years ago. Stone villa rentals are hard to find, but new-build apartments are plentiful in resorts such as Okrug Donji, Okrug Gornji and Slatine.

Island Krk, Island Lošinj, Island Rab and Island Pag. The islands in Croatia are also very popular, and one can find a range of private accommodation options on islands such as Krk, Losinj, Rab and Pag. Look out for apartment and villa options in the following resorts: Novalja, Stara Novalja, Povljana (Pag), Mali Losinj, Veli Losinj, Nerezine (Losinj), Krk, Malinska, Vrbnik, Omisalj (Krk), and Lopar and Rab (Rab).
